What Was The Occupy Movement Really About?

Newt, for all of his faults, is actually spot on here. The interesting thing about this clip, which I have seen all around the web, is that it originally came from an outfit who's purpose is to say bad things about the Conservative Movement in this country. Ironic, that I am able to use their own work, unedited, and make the opposite point.

Man, have we failed our kiddies, big time. A whole generation, educated almost entirely it seems by leftists. How did that happen anyhow? I know a bunch of school teachers, and they are almost 4 to 1 Socialists. Administrators, same thing. What was the result of that? We have a whole generation of young adults who have absolutely no concept of economic reality. At some point in the past, someone told these kids that by going to college and spending $200,000 that they did not have, they should not worry so much about pursuing a course of study that would one day produce an income sufficient to repay those government subsidized loans. What we have is a whole generation of Sociology and Poly Sci degree holders who believe that it is their right to expect a minimum of $18.00 per hour explaining to me the nuances of the different caffeinated drinks at Starbucks. The fact is, an econ 101 class should have taught them that Starbucks could not possible sell enough coffee to pay for a counter clerk earning half that much. Get ready folks, that $10 cup of coffee is on the way.

When I was a store manager for a major U.S. retailer, I would sometimes be assigned the task of interviewing college grads for positions in our Assistant Manager Training Program. In 1992, some of these kids actually thought it was a negotiation process for salary and benefits. They would all look at me and tell me that they thought they were worth $50,000 per year. I would always answer the same way.

Why stop there? I'm sure your mother would say you are worth $1 Million per year. The point is, you have to be worth it to somebody. In our store, there is nothing you currently know, or amount of physical productivity that you could actually perform that would justify paying you that salary. The position for which you are being considered pays $375 per week. While in that position, we want you to learn enough to be worth more to us. Fail, and you won't be around for very long, succeed, and you will be promoted to greater responsibility.

Here in lies the problem with the left in general, and the Occupests in particular. The lesson of a value to others is lost on them. Life owes them something, and providing a value for that payment is for someone else to figure out. Looking over the list of OWS demands, I had two thoughts. The first was outright scorn and laughter. The second, how could our education system have failed an entire generation so spectacularly? These people were largely college educated folk. The OWS movement is perhaps the single greatest argument for ending the Jimmy Carter created bit of stupidity known as the Department of Education.  Here, for your reading pleasure, is the list of the OWS demands. This is what your tax dollars, and the Department of Education has given us, a whole generation of useless morons.

Repeal the Taft-Hartley Act. Unionize ALL workers immediately.
Raise the minimum wage immediately to $18/hr. Create a maximum wage of $90/hr to eliminate inequality.
Institute a 6 hour workday, and 6 weeks of paid vacation.
Institute a moratorium on all foreclosures and layoffs immediately.
Repeal racist and xenophobic English-only laws.
Open the borders to all immigrants, legal or illegal. Offer immediate, unconditional amnesty, to all undocumented residents of the US.
Create a single-payer, universal health care system.
Pass stricter campaign finance reform laws. Ban all private donations. All campaigns will receive equal funding, provided by the taxpayers.
Institute a negative income tax, and tax the very rich at rates up to 90%.
Pass far stricter environmental protection and animal rights laws.
Allow workers to elect their supervisors.
Lower the retirement age to 55. Increase Social Security benefits.
Create a 5% annual wealth tax for the very rich.
Ban the private ownership of land.
Make homeschooling illegal. Religious fanatics use it to feed their children propaganda.
Reduce the age of majority to 16.
Abolish the death penalty and life in prison. We call for the immediate release of all death row inmates from death row and transferred to regular prisons.
Release all political prisoners immediately.
Immediate withdrawal from Iraq and Afghanistan.
Abolish the debt limit.
Ban private gun ownership.
Strengthen the separation of church and state.
Immediate debt forgiveness for all.
End the 'War on Drugs'.

For those of you who consider yourselves to be mainstream and Democrats, take a good look at the group you are identifying with. This list comes straight from the Communist Party list of proposals. I have been called a fringe wingnut, a racist homophobic old people hating war monger all due to my belief in the free market system. Facebook friends have accused me of attempted murder in regards to the Congresswoman Giffords shooting, and through it all, I have attempted to calmly state my position in the arena of ideas. I have seen articles, and some of them well written, glorifying the OWS protests as some sort of morally superior movement, (if lacking in basic toilet training,) which indeed represented 99% of Americans. (A concept in itself which is funny beyond belief in a nation so evenly divided as ours.) I ask those of you who support the Democrat candidates out of nothing more than momentum, is this truly what you want?
